The population of Stavropol is about 450 thousand people belonging to over 90 nationalities. Historical places of our city
Stavropol is translated as a city of the cross (from greek). One of the main historical sightseeing is Suvorov Cross, which had been named after the great Russian commander Alexander Vasiljevich Suvorov. It became not only a visiting card of Stavropol and its symbol .
This building went down in history as “Biger’s drugstore”. It did and still does play a town-planning role. In 1910 the first brick was laid into foundation of this building. It was a central drugstore of the city: different medical chemicals had being prepared here; a lot of famous chemicals were delivered from Europe and America. Nowadays it is used both as a drugstore and museum.
Stavropol was the main «Gates» of Russia at the Caucasus. Stavropolsky boulevard ended by Tiflissky Gates (Triumphal Arch), which had not only security function but also served a monument to the great patriotic war of 1812. In Soviet Union times they were destroyed, but by 221-years of Stavropol city Tiflissky Gates (Triumphal Arch) were restored due to initiative of citizens and mayor of the city.
Since XIX century the Nikolaevsky prospect (now Karl Marks avenue), is the main street of the city. It is a beautiful green boulevard with historic places, monuments, shops, administrative buildings.
Cultural and entertainment center
Historically, Stavropol is the center of cultural life and education in the region. Stavropol was the first city in the North Caucasus to establish drama-theater, newspaper, radio, public museum.
In our town you can visit the regional theatre, where different troupes come to show the most interesting plays (pic.10).
You can get acquainted with the detailed history of Stavropol city at the regional museum named after Prozritelev and Prave, where annual art exhibitions are held.
Walking around the cultural center of our town, please, pay attention at a great number of cultural and historical monuments of the great figures of our country, such as A.S. Pushkin, M.J. Lermontov, A.V. Suvorov.
