NCSTU is ahead of time
Boris Sinelnikov is the rector of North Caucasus State Technical University, Doctor of Sciences, Professor.
He was born in Nikolaev (Ukraine). In 1970 he graduated from Mendeleev Moscow Chemical and Technological Institute with honours. He became a great scientist, organizer and reformer of Stavropol Polytechnic Institute (nowadays NCSTU) where he has been working since 1987.
B. Sinelnikov is an eminent scientist in the field of solid state chemistry and optoelectronics. The sphere of his scientific interests includes chemistry of processes taking place in electroluminescent materials that work in electrostatic fields. He was the first scientist in our country who developed synthesis technology of electroluminescent materials in electrostatic fields and introduced it into industry. He also developed the production technique of electroluminescent panels and other optoelectronic products. Professor Sinelnikov has inventor’s certificates and more than 400 publications including manuals and monographs.
Nowadays NCSTU is one of the largest and at the same time one of the newest scientific and educational centres of the North Caucasus. For the last 39 years a small polytechnic institute has developed into the leading university in the south of Russia that applies modern education technologies and follows the priority directions of science. NCSTU provides competitive personnel training. Thus for the first time in Russia an All-Russian centre for public opinion investigation made an independent examination of higher educational institutions. The heads of 3000 Russian enterprises were interviewed and a list of higher educational institutions was made that reflected graduates in demand. Only two HEIs of Russian south got into that list. NCSTU was one of them. Moreover, on the IX Russian rectors congress a list of the leading universities over the world was presented made by the Higher Education Statistics Agency “Reitor”. According to that list NCSTU belongs to 430 leading universities of the world.
Nowadays NCSTU trains personnel for construction, food, gas, chemical, petrochemical and power industries of the North Caucasus. The university and its 4 branches situated in Nevinnomissk, Georgievsk, Kislovodsk and Pyatigorsk train more than 20 thousand students. The training is carried out in 46 directions. The university has 142 Doctors of Sciences and 427 PhDs.
The scientific research of NCSTU is also worth notice. The university has 12 research departments (research institutions, scientific and production centres, research laboratories etc). During last 5 years the scientists of NCSTU took part in 700 fundamental, applied and experimental-design research works.
The scientific research of the university is carried out in 24 directions that reflect the priority directions in scientific, technical and technological development of the Russian Federation. Some scientific directions are granted the status of scientific schools. The university numbers 10 scientific schools.
The scientific school “Physical chemistry, solid state chemistry, modern micro and nanotechnologies”, supervised by professor Sinelnikov, is well-known in Russia as well as abroad. The scientists who work in this field developed new nanoluminophors of light-sensitive materials. They absorb the blue component of the light that is harmful for living organisms and transform it into the red component that is wholesome. Such luminophors can provide good crop capacity in hothouses. The university conducts negotiations on patent purchase with Finland and Sweden.
Another scientific direction is nanotechnology food additives development. The scientists of NCSTU developed nano-sized silver that percolates through foodstuffs cell, accumulates and depresses the process of decomposition. Recently NCSTU granted 5 applications for financing in “Rosnanotech”, two of these applications were approved. The first one is aimed at construction of solar power engineering plant (Stavropol), the second one – at construction of 5th generation LED production plant (Stavropol, Tomsk).
One of the electronics directions of the university is diamond-like films and silicon carbide films (size 5 nm) production for electronic devices of new generation. In close cooperation with Co Ltd scientific and production company “Exiton” the university develops modern technologies of monocrystals production including sapphire that owing to its mechanical, optical and structural properties is essential for electronics, optoelectronics, optics, fine mechanics, instrument engineering and laser technology.
On the basis of NCSTU a Joint nanotechnologies centre was established. It’s the only centre in Stavropol region that unites scientific community of Russia’s south. Such kind of collaboration is a great step forward in the sphere of nanotechnologies.
The university plays an essential role in biotechnology of dairy carbohydrate. The scientific school “Living systems” developing lactulose and its concentrates lactusan and alcosoft applied in big variety of foodstuffs has gained general acceptance. The scientific supervisor is Khramtsov A.G., Doctor of Sciences, professor, academician of Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, honoured scientist of the Russian Federation.
During past few years 270 monographs were published based on research results. The university received 210 patents for invitation. An integral part of scientific research is participation of the university in scientific and technical conferences, programmes and grants.
NCSTU established mutually beneficial relations with following foreign partners: Technical University of Chemnitz, Technical University of Munich, University of Hamburg (Germany); Prague Institute of Chemical Technology, company “Mega” (CzechRepublic); Higher School of Administration and Maintenance in Warsaw, Baltic Higher School of Humanities in Koszalin (Poland); Colombian corporation “Corasphaltos” (Colombia).
The scientific research results are regularly presented at scientific and technical conferences of different levels. IX Moscow International Salon of Innovations and Investments, Annual International Investments Forum in Sochi, International Congress and Exhibition “High Technologies. Innovations. Investments”, All-Russian forum “Educational Milieu” are among them.
Much attention is paid to research work of young scientists. Nowadays there are 61 programmes of doctoral and 13 programmes of post-doctoral studies, 20 doctoral and 8 post-doctoral Dissertation Councils functioning in the university. The list of programmes is gradually extended.
An important part of the university’s infrastructure is Stavropol Technological Park. Its main objectives are to fulfill scientific and technical potential of the university, to apply high technologies, to give all-out support to scientists establishing small innovative enterprises.
NCSTU is not only notable for its scientific and research work, but it also implements unique educational programmes such as promotional programme for theological education, Islamic education above all. Since 2006 the university has been training personnel for confessions of the North Caucasus in specialty “Sociology” with specialization in history and culture of Islam.
NCSTU as the leading technical university in the North Caucasus provides bilingual training in following programmes: “Management”, “Milk and dairy products technology”, “Chemical technology and biotechnology”. The students of these specialties are taught unique lectures in English. Such kind of training is used to develop business communication skills of the graduates and raise their competitiveness.
NCSTU ranks among the leading institutions of higher education that apply innovative technologies in education quality management. A unique integrated computerized system of academic activity management has been created in the university. The system unites all structural subdivisions of the educational institution and estimates their activities by means of a rating. The system controls the quality of academic activity in real-time mode in the university and its 4 branches. The education module makes it possible to create electronic training courses using high technologies. The program is unique in its scales and in detailing level of the stored data.
In October 2001 a boarding school for gifted children was established on the base of NCSTU. The founder and the project director is Sinelnikov B.M. The school has its own resource base, it also has access to university’s laboratories, library and the data base RUNNet. The training is carried out by the leading academics of the university in a highly professional way. Each group consists of 15-17 students. The academic curriculum in the boarding school includes the university component that gives the students a good opportunity for intellectual growth and professional self-determination.
NCSTU is the only university in the south of Russia that applies health saving technologies in education: a multidisciplinary medical centre functions here that monitors students’ health. By the way it may soon become methodological centre connecting higher educational institutions of North Caucasus Federal District.
One of the largest projects of the university is construction of a new education and laboratory building with total area 52 thousand square metres. The new project resembles the campus of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The building contains lecture halls, a spacious dining hall and a youth centre with auditorium for 700 seats.
The students’ life is interesting and eventful. The students don’t limit themselves with studies. They also find opportunities for recreational activities. Here is where the centre of aesthetic education comes to light. It supervises the activities of a dance group “Dancing Flight”, a Caucasian dance group “Gorets”, the singing group, a little theatre “Prometheus” (under the guidance of Boris Scherbakov, an Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation), a folk students’ revue theatre, a model studio. Those who have a good sense of humor can join the Club of the Funny and Inventive. The centre of aesthetic education holds all sorts of contests and festivals. Traditional contests are “Miss NCSTU”, “Mister NCSTU”, a singing contest “The voices of the university”, a dance contest “Technodance Play”, an instrumental music contest “Chords of Politech”, an amateur arts contest “Students’ spring” etc.
